Terms of Use
Last updated 1 November 2026.
1. The licence
Padkos is licensed to you under Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the standard EULA). These terms add a medical disclaimer and a few points about the AI features. If anything here conflicts with the standard EULA, the standard EULA wins. The Privacy Policy explains how your data is handled.
2. Medical disclaimer
Padkos is not medical advice and is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. It is a general guide to eating, planning meals and seeing your own health data in one place.
Check with a doctor or registered dietitian before you start a diet or change how much you eat, and especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, have or had an eating disorder, have diabetes, a heart, kidney or liver condition, or take medicine affected by food. Stop and get help if you feel unwell.
Padkos is not for anyone under 13, and calorie targets are not suitable for children or teenagers who are still growing.
3. How Padkos works out the numbers
- Resting burn (BMR). Mifflin-St Jeor from your weight, height, age and sex: 10 x weight in kg + 6.25 x height in cm - 5 x age, plus 5 for men or minus 161 for women. When a scale has measured your lean body mass, Katch-McArdle is used instead: 370 + 21.6 x lean mass in kg.
- Daily burn. BMR multiplied by the activity factor you choose. When there is enough reliable data, Padkos uses your Apple Watch average, or the burn implied by 28 days of your own food log and weight, instead.
- Budget. Daily burn minus the deficit your goal pace asks for (a pace of 0.25 to 1 % of body weight a week). It is never set below the larger of 80 % of your BMR and 1,500 kcal for men or 1,200 kcal for women, and never faster than 1 % of body weight a week. A recorded workout adds back half its active calories.
- Macros. Protein from your fat free mass, fat at 25 % of the budget, carbohydrates the rest.
- Food values. From the built-in South African food database, product labels and Open Food Facts. These are averages; real food varies.
- AI estimates. Values worked out by the AI from a photo or a description are marked "(estimate)" in the app. They can be wrong. Check and correct them.
Every one of these is an estimate from formulas and averages, not a measurement of your body. In the app, tap the info button next to the budget to see your own numbers.
4. AI features
- AI features are optional and off until you agree. They are provided by DeepSeek, a third party, as described in the Privacy Policy.
- AI answers can be wrong, incomplete or out of date, including nutrition values, recipes and things found on the web. Big changes (a week plan, deleting things, cupboard and shopping changes) are shown to you first to Accept or Change, and most actions can be undone. You stay responsible for what you eat.
- The free AI allowance is limited per device per day and may change. We may pause or end AI features, for example if the service provider changes its terms.
- Do not use the AI features to break the law, to harm anyone, or to try to get around the daily limit.
5. Your content
Your recipes, photos, plans and notes are yours. They stay on your devices, in Apple Health and in your own iCloud Drive. Only import recipes and pictures you are allowed to use.
6. No warranty, limited liability
Padkos is free and is provided as is, as set out in the standard EULA. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss from relying on the numbers, plans or AI answers in the app. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act, 2008 of South Africa or other consumer law that cannot be excluded.
7. Changes and contact
If these terms change, the new version is posted here with a new date. Questions: ruankoekemoer@outlook.com. Padkos is made by Ruan Koekemoer, South Africa. South African law applies, without taking away the protection of the law where you live.
